J. Keshy Clothing Store (2011) Edmonton. Ab. W 1E5 Telephone: 780-758-0608 STORE HOURS Monday - Saturday 7.30 a.m.-g.OO p.m. Sunday 11.30 a.m. -7.00 p.m. Tucked away in the Park Annex strip mall (58 St. and 118 Av.) is a new store: J Keshy Clothing Store. The owner/operator is Betty Juan. Now, most people would immediately jump to the conclusion that Betty is Spanish ... well, she is, sort of! Betty came from Uganda 11 years ago via Saskatchewan (one year) and then the last 10 in Alberta. Her many times great grandparents were Spanish. Betty is Sudanese. For Betty, educated at the Canadian College, this is her second venture in the o hing store business. The first one was in Beverly close to where she lives in Abbottsfield. The store which includes both new and gently used clothing has styles for all ages. She helps people in her community and her clothes are affordable ... $1.00 and ... and, you can have a coffee as you shop. Confirming what most of us already know, Betty has found the people of Highlands and Bellevue very friendly.

Your Mini Mart by John Tidridge Edmonton AB. T5W 1E5 780-471-5631 Fifty-nine hours a week! How many of us work that many hours? Unheard of. I imagine, however, that is the work week of many small store operators. Richard Teo, originally from Sarawak (Borneo) via New Zealand, arrived in Canada about 20 years ago. Richard opened his present store 13 years ago. It is situated in a small shopping mall that has, unfortunately, seen better days. Known as the Park Annex Shopping Centre it once housed Park Annex Pharmacy, Park Annex Food Mart, Mary's Beauty Salon etc. It is now down to 2 stores, Richard's and a recently opened used clothing store. Your Mini Mart is small but packed to the gunwales (nautical term) with groceries of all description. Richard says if you need anything just drop in and he will secure if for you if he doesn't have it on hand. Richard who is a member of the New Zealand Institute of Management was trained at the New Zealand Technical College in Business Management. He finds the Highlands people are friendly and the area for the most pleasant and clean to be in. Richard lives with his wife and 2 children in north-west Edmonton. The store is open during the following hours: Monday-Saturday 10.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m. Drop in and say hello ... and buy something! |

THAT SMALL BUILDING… John Tidridge Finding this address, 5815-118 Avenue, might be a challenge to even to those people who say, “Give me a street address and I will find it”. Those experts will say, “It has to be on 118 Avenue, between 58 and 59 Streets, and, because it’s an odd number it has be on the south side of the avenue. Fair enough, you will get to 118 avenue and check the addresses on the avenue and you will not find 5815. Then, obviously, Tidridge has made a mistake, not a real phenomenon! In fact, some will give up and say, “So what, who cares.” 5815 does exist in the form of a lot of 398 sq ft [about 20ft by 20ft], with a building of 108 sq ft. [just over 10 ft by 10 ft]. City records describe the building as a tool shed, built in 1959.The official title is, TCO Gas Reg[ulating] Station #36. This lot has an assessed value of $5,500.00, and comes complete with an account number! How to locate the building? You must go to the lane south of 118 Avenue, and travel halfway down the lane, and there the building sits.. From the signage it is obviously from a well known company! Attempts to find out what does go on inside the building met, initially with great success. A representative of the company said she would have the information to me a.s.a.p. Unfortunately her colleagues [apparently] let her down, and, I finished up with, ‘nowt’. But having no facts means nothing to those in the writing trade. It is suggested that the Allied Truckers’ Concert Organization may, in fact, use the building as a concert hall where melodious ‘etudes for the air horn’ are practiced to make the sound more acceptable to the human ear, Or, the shack is connected with fishing organization and it may have been left there under disguise by Newfoundlanders heading too or from “Fort Mc’. There appears to be a smoke stack on the roof of the building… A careful watch has been kept on the building as it known that a truck does occasionally stop at the building and a person will enter for short periods of time…setting up the music stands? We shall see… OK that’s enough…now you know where 5815-188 Avenue is!
